The speed at which the country’s autocratic regime fell, after a storm of popular protest against long-term dictator Zine Ben-Ali, has terrified thousands of Western tourists and sent them scrambling to escape the mobs.
It has also shocked other governments in the region. Regimes from Morocco and Algeria along the coast to Egypt, Jordan, Syria and the Gulf will look at events with a deepening sense of foreboding."
