"Ask anyone if he or she thinks cancer is high in Gibraltar, and the answer is bound to be unanimous: Yes, it is high, too high.
Now, along comes a Study which says that Gibraltar is not a high risk community for cancer.
Many people will obviously find such an assertion difficult to believe.
And why? Because for a lifetime everyone has been hearing that cancer in Gibraltar is high; there have been reports about pollution in this area which have been classed as the highest in Europe; many families seem to have someone that has suffered or is suffering from this problem; lots of people have been sent to London for treatment...the story about cancer is endless.
The Study says that the total cancer incidence rate in Gibraltar for the whole population is at the EU average.
Now then, is that good or bad? We must not think that being at the EU average is good - do we know if it is good?
The cancer rate for men only is in the lower of the EU range with only four EU countries having a lower rate than Gibraltar. That's what the report says, and presumably we have to believe it."
